Unable to open a document in Word or Excel
NOTE –
SFMC does not use the full version of MS Office, instead we use a version called Microsoft Office Starter Edition 2010
Recently Microsoft did an update to the version we use that has caused “file association” to no longer work. This means you cannot open a document by double clicking on it. You will realise this issue is present when you look at the file and there is an orange icon instead of the familiar Word or Excel icon.
To get around this there are a couple of easy workarounds.
1. Right click on the file and select “open with” then select Microsoft Client Virtualization Handler (Microsoft Application Virtualization DDE Launcher if it is excel).
OR
2. Open Word Starter or Excel Starter first then select File – Open and navigate to the file you want to open.
If you want to permanently change the "file associations", so you can just double click on the file and open it:
- Click on start and in the box type File associations
- Click on change the file type associated with a file extension
- Choose docx and then click on change program select Microsoft Client Virtualization Handler
- Choose xlsx and then click on change program select Microsoft Application Virtualization DDE Launcher
